A tough native warm season grass producing large airy red/purple panicles with gracefully drooping spikelets in August and September creating a purple haze effect, leaves almost 1.5 foot long, grows from basal fans, looks great in flower arrangements, butterfly host plant (Common Wood Nymph [Ceryonis pegala], Little Glassywing [Pompeius verna], and others), provides cover for wildlife, tolerates poor and/or rocky soil, sand & clay.
