A rare tall, almost tropical-looking plant of moist riversides, meadows and disturbed habitats. Showy white flowers appear on stalks from July through October, and turn to dry seed capsules which may seed in nearby. Leaves are large, showy, and maple-like, giving this plant a vigorous appearance; although this species can grow to up to fifteen feet tall, it rarely actually reaches that height, and can easily be cut back by trimming in early summer. Tolerates occasional flooding, poor soil drainage, and silt. Is under particular threat by the invasive Japanese Knotweed (Reynoutria japonica), which can have a smothering effect on the unique habitats Virginia Mallow requires to grow. Japanese Knotweed can easily crowd out populations of Virginia Mallow, which is rare throughout its range and has been listed as a species of special concern.
