Large cones (up to 1 foot) of pale yellow flowers from July to August are followed by dark burgundy berries (actually drupes) that persist into the winter, pinnately divided shiny leaves are oddly winged along the center, bright red fall color, produces both a taproot and spreading rhizomes, terrific wildlife food with a wide variety of birds and mammals enjoying the seeds, excellent drought tolerance (actually thrives under drought conditions!), does well in sandy or rocky soil, air pollution tolerant, host to several Butterflies & Moths including the Red-banded Hairstreak (Calycopis cecrops) and Spring Azure (Celastrina ladon), recovers quickly after fires, attracts pollinators, plants are occasionally dioecious with male and female flowers on different plants.
