Virginia Sweetspire

A showy mounding, multi-stemmed shrub with long-lasting white flowers (April-June) that are incredibly attractive to pollinators, hummingbirds, butterflies, and many types of bee. Leaves are glossy and turn a lovely red/purple color in the autumn, providing long-lasting fall color- in fact, in the southern parts of its range, this species is semi-evergreen, and the colorful autumn leaves tend to persist long into the winter. Rare parts of its range, this species is very tolerant of a wide variety of conditions, including frequent flooding, well-drained soil, a wide range of soil types and pH, and deep shade, although it tends to get slightly leggy in very deep shade and grows most attractively with a bit of sun. An excellent plant for rain gardens, especially when grown in a mass, it makes for great bird nesting habitat, and seed-eating birds may eat its dry seed capsules. It's also ideal for erosion control in wet or sloped places, especially places prone to flooding. Has a tendency to spread by root suckers and form thickets, but can be easily pruned back (or simply mowed around) to maintain its shape. Overall an underused and very attractive plant for landscaping, which supports many species of bird, butterflies, and pollinators.
