Pretty airy panicles form at the tip of short bamboo-like stems from May through July & last for months, fresh bright green foliage (darker green in shade) consists of short, wide leaves which stick out from the stem every few inches, actually blooms again in late summer - these flower heads are mostly concealed near the stem but produce seeds which are eagerly sought after by chickadees, host plant for Tawny-edged Skipper (Polites themistocles), and other moths, erect or laxly growing along the ground, likes hot humid summers, woods & wood edges, nice contrast with woodland spring flowers or ferns, tuft forming by short rhizomes, spread 2-3 foot, yellow fall color.
