A spreading multi-stemmed shrub with 2 inch wide flat-topped clusters of creamy white flowers starting in May through June, produces persistent pale blue/white fruit (Bluebirds love them), broad leaves turn showy reddish-purple in fall, spreads by stolons to form colonies, conspicuous bright red/purple stems are outstanding in winter, attracts birds & butterflies, host plant for Spring Azure butterfly (Celastrina ladon), a great shrub for wet places, suitable for bonsai, great rain garden plant.
