Bright clusters of pink flowers cover the branches of the entire tree before the leaves emerge creating an unforgettable display of color from April to May, large smooth perfectly heart-shaped leaves up to 6" long & wide are tinged with red when they first unfold, brown papery seed pods persist through the winter months, short trunked tree develops a rounded crown, food plant for Henry's Elfin Butterfly (Callophrys henrici) caterpillars, good nectar source, lots of birds feast on the seeds (Turkey, Quail, Doves, Grouse...), suitable for bonsai.
