Yellow/green to red flowers in March produce narrow maple 'keys' that helicopter to the ground in the fall, deeply cut leaves with large secondary teeth are silvery on the back, older mature trees develop shaggy bark, fast growing, drought resistant yet will grow in mucky soils and flood plains, drought and air pollution tolerant, nectar and pollen for native bees, seeds are wildlife food, host plant for many fabulous moths including the Promethea Silkmoth (Callosamia promethea), Rosy Maple Moth (Dryocampa rubicunda), and the diminutive Three-Spotted Filip (Heterophleps triguttaria), great nesting tree.
