Large dense spires of frothy rose-pink flowers from July through September, tough upright woolly brown stems bear alternate leaves, spreads by seed and rhizomes, tolerant of many soil types, enjoys sandy and acid soil, although able to grow with average moisture it is considered a plant of high quality wetland habitat, salt tolerant, attracts butterflies, host for Spring Azure (Celastrina ladon), great rain garden plant.
