About our logo...
Our logo shows a Fowler's wood toad (Bufo woodhousei)
sitting under a Toadshade trillium
(Trillium sessile) (drawn by Maggie H. Borland).
Yes - we have both on our farm.
Toadshade Trillium - Trillium sessile
Toadshade trillium is a close-flowered, maroon
trillium with deeply mottled light and dark
green leaves. There is also a form with
yellowish green flowers. It is found in rich
woods from western New York and Pennsylvania
south. As with all trilliums, it takes many
years for a mature flowering plant to grow from
seed.
Fowler's Toad - Bufo woodhousei
This is the eastern race of Woodhouse's toad.
It has a spotted brown olive or gray back with a light
stripe down the middle.
In the eastern United States, this toad is abundant as far
south as South Carolina.
From the edges of ponds lakes and streams the male
emits a loud discordant "w-a-a-a-h" during the breeding season,
which ranges from March in the south to July in the north.
Although we do not have a pond, stream, or lake on our propery,
we do see these toads from time to time. I must confess,
I have yet to see one under one of my Toadshade trilliums,
but I'll keep looking!
