Clouds of small (> ½ in) pale blue-violet flowers with centers changing from white to deep red from August through October, broadly heart-shaped 2-6" deep green leaves, attracts butterflies, beautiful cut flowers, dry to average soil, partial sun, 2-5' tall.
Asters are food plant for caterpillars of butterflies such as Silvery Checkerspot (Melitaea nycteis) and Painted Crescent (Phyciodes picta)
