Curious maroon 1.5” jug-like flowers with long pointed lobes are found close to the ground from April to May, satiny leaves are broadly heart-shaped & 4-6” long, this plant makes an interesting & attractive spreading ground cover, likes rich woodland conditions, has very aromatic roots that run along the surface of the ground, food plant for Pipevine Swallowtail Butterfly caterpillars (Battus philenor).
