A Word About Cultivars

As any of you who have heard me speak know, I can go on quite a rant about cultivars. Nothing wrong with them, per se, but they exclude much of the genetic diversity often changing the plant to render it unrecognizable or innutritious to wildlife. So, you’ll be much surprised to see that we have 2 this year – both selections of the Common Blue Violet. One is ‘Freckles’ – I explain my weakness for that one in its description. The other is a plant that was found growing in the wild on a friend’s property in Buck’s County, PA and given to us as a gift. We're studying it, but as far as we can tell, it's a form of Viola sororia. (By the way – we don’t list Native ranges for either of these – as cultivars they really have none).
