Harebell

One of my favorites! An incredibly beautiful, delicate little perennial with showy, bell-shaped blue-violet flowers nodding on clusters of graceful, slender stems (June-September). The leaves are equally slender, almost grass-like; these plants can often be found growing in harsh environments, such as between rocks poking out of mountain streams, or high above the water on cold rocky tidelines. Tolerant of occasional flooding, but requires good drainage; ideally suited to rocky soil and crevices, and may be grown very successfully in retaining walls, rock gardens, dry meadows and prairies. May attract hummingbirds and bumble bees. Interestingly, this species is native across most of the northern hemisphere; known in Scotland as the "Bluebells of Scotland," its native range stretches all the way to Siberia. We once found a patch growing from rocks in a mountain stream in Norway--it's always lovely to see a familiar face when you're traveling, so keep an eye out next time you find yourself in the mountains!
