Very showy large (1") dark blue or violet lupine-like flowers on erect spikes from May through June, stems emerge in the spring looking like strange asparagus, handsome foliage of bluish clover-like leaves up to 3" long, very interesting 3 inch long inflated seed pods turn from green to black through the season & rattle in the wind, dried seed pods persist on stems through early winter & make a unique addition to flower arrangements (dried & otherwise), great cut flowers, attracts butterflies, host plant for Wild Indigo Duskywing & Zarucco Duskywing Butterfly caterpillars (Erynnis baptisiae & E. zarucco), an interesting plant all season long, it can tolerate poor soil & is quite drought tolerant (the roots go down 8 foot or more over time!), clay tolerant. Awarded 2010 Plant of the Year by the Perennial Plant Association!.
